University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES)

Facilities Master Plan Award

MCA is pleased to be working with the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) on a five-year update to the current 2012-2021 Facilities Master Plan. UMCES is a public research institution focusing on marine and environmental sciences that conducts cutting-edge research on today’s most pressing environmental problems. The Master Plan will involve distilling a comprehensive laboratory needs analysis from broad-based user input and providing design solutions for the three UMCES campuses; the Appalachian Lab in Frostburg, MD, the Chesapeake Biological Lab in Solomons, MD, and the Horn Point Lab in Cambridge, MD.

Alum Jilian Breeden ('01 - BS Chemical Engineering), and Veronica Plischke ('14 - BArch) proudly represented MCA at this inclusive event which provided recruiting and marketing access to more than 1,000 students studying Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, and Industrial Design.

MCA Hosts 2nd Annual Design Showcase

MCA was pleased to host the AIABaltimore Health & Wellness Committee’s 2nd Annual Design Showcase: Good Design=Good Health on February 15, 2017. The event was well-attended by Baltimore region building owners, architects, engineers, planners, construction managers and industry professionals who presented their stories on recent projects that have made meaningful contributions towards personal health for their users and occupants.

MCA Hosting 2nd Annual Design Showcase

MCA is excited to announce that we will be hosting the AIABaltimore Health & Wellness Committee’s 2nd Annual Design Showcase: Good Design=Good Health. The exhibition is intended to be a fun way for architects, engineers, urban planners, interior designers, contractors and others to show the local community how they’ve been creating healthy spaces. The goal of the exhibition is to showcase designs that promote health and wellness in a variety of ways. It takes place on February 15th from 6pm-8pm at our new office in Clipper Mill. MCA Relocates Baltimore HQ

Marshall Craft Associates has relocated our Baltimore corporate headquarters to Clipper Mill. The magnificent brick and stone Assembly Building was constructed in 1890 by Poole and Hunt for the assembly of large machines, including a 65-foot, 500 ton sand wheel (the largest in the world at the time) and the 36 iron columns for the U. S. Capitol dome which were fabricated on site by Poole and Hunt in the 1850's before the Assembly Building was constructed, that are still in place today.

USGS National Fish Research Lab gets New BSL-3 Lab

MCA is completing Construction Documents as part of Callas Contractors’ design-build team for renovations to existing wet laboratories to bring the facility into compliance as a BioSafety Level-3 Aquaculture Laboratory (BSL-3). The project focus is to improve containment of potential pathogens, and is being designed for the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Fish Research Lab, located at the Leetown Science Center in Kearneysville, West Virginia.

Full STEAM Ahead @ SPSG Part II

St. Paul’s School for Girls annually hosts an event for students grades 4-12 from all schools in the area to explore careers in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) industries as part of the Maryland STEM Festival. Students circulate through different stations learning about different STEAM industries and careers by participating in hands-on activities led by volunteers from STEAM industries. On November 10, 2016, Michelle Hooper and Briana Allen represented MCA at the event. Using SketchUp Pro, they illustrated the steps taken to complete a space planning exercise for an office building. Students got a glimpse of how 3-D technology helps throughout the design process and helps explain our design intent to clients. It was the perfect opportunity to showcase the exciting and diverse field of architecture and how our profession relates to each of the STEAM categories.

Gutierrez Memorial Walk

On October 22nd, MCA Architecture participated in the 7th Annual John K. Gutierrez Memorial Walk. The walk is an annual event held to commemorate the legacy of John Gutierrez. Friends, family, and community members gather once a year for a walk through Druid Hill Park in remembrance of John and to help raise funds for the Gutierrez Memorial Fund. MCA was happy to contribute to making this year's walk a success!

MCA’s Michelle Hooper and Alan Bowman joined Maryland School for the Blind President Michael Bina and honored guests to celebrate ground-breaking for the $14.8 million Preschool Early Learning and Outreach Center. Scheduled for completion next year, the project involves renovation and an addition to the circa 1957 Andrews Hall.

MCA Welcomes Jilian Breeden!

Jilian Breeden, P.E., LEED AP graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in engineering. As a self-described “people person” that enjoys working with clients and solving challenging facilities issues, she quickly gravitated toward consulting with a focus on facilities planning and programming. With 14 years working at ERG in Virginia, Jilian has comprehensive experience in space planning, new construction and renovation project development, and land-use planning, particularly for the Navy and DoD. Jilian is based in Virginia and will be leveraging her planning skills for MCA’s regional client base.

The project creates a forum for interdisciplinary dialogue between general education course in physical education, wellness, stress management and nutrition, and the allied health professions degree programs in addition to a competition facility for college’s athletic teams.

Wyoming K-12 Statewide Assessments

After encountering two late spring blizzards, MCA architects recently returned from a six week stay in Wyoming where they worked with the Facilities Engineering Associates (FEA) team on their statewide existing facilities assessment for all of Wyoming’s 545 K-12 public school buildings. The MCA team focused on providing full existing conditions assessments for 38 schools and administrative facilities for the Laramie 1 School System. The team utilized FEA’s proprietary FCNI (Facility Condition Needs Index) assessment system which was customized to meet the specific needs of the State of Wyoming School Facilities Department.

Anthony Gill Travels to Penn State

On Thursday, 4/14/16 Anthony Gill traveled to Penn State’s Stuckeman School of Architecture to critique the thesis work of ten masters degree students just two weeks before their final presentation. Meeting with his former Professor Darla Lindberg and a new faculty member Eric Sutherland of New York City, Anthony provided some practical insight and a fresh third-party perspective for these students to consider as they head towards graduation. In case you are wondering, he did not advise anyone to give up pursuing their architecture degree.

MCA jumps 2 spots in national ranking!

Modern Healthcare magazine has just released the 2016 rankings of the Top 100 Design Firms. A national survey that tracks the dollar volume of construction costs for healthcare work completed in the year prior to publication, MCA moved up two spots from the survey published one year ago.

Full STEAM Ahead @ SPSG

Michelle was invited to St. Paul’s School for Girls to lead their culminating exercise in the interdisciplinary STEAM unit. Michelle is an SPSG alumna, and is also a parent to 2 daughters who are SPSG alumna. Michelle provided feedback on the students STEAM projects and gave insight into the overall challenges of creating skyscrapers and moving drawings from blue print stages to finished product. Michelle shared experiences as a woman in the professional world and shared her journey to becoming an architect.

PROJECT AWARD

Harvard University @ Dumbarton Oaks

MCA has been selected to provide forensic investigations and design services for multiple buildings at Harvard University’s Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collections Gallery in Old Georgetown, Washington, DC. Utilizing 3D point cloud laser technologies and working with world-renowned, Australian lighting designer, Emrah Baki Ulas, the project involves forensic investigations and design for the Main House including analysis and upgrades to multiple HVAC systems, improvements to the exterior envelope, restoration of interior finishes and the addition of gallery lighting for the 1928 Music Room, Byzantine Gallery and Byzantine Courtyard as well as audio-visual enhancements to the Music Room and trustee’s Study Room. The work also includes restoration of interior finishes, analysis and elimination of moisture infiltration and restoration of exterior stone cladding on Philip Johnson’s iconic 1963 Pre-Columbian Wing.

Health Professions and Athletics Center Opening

Maryland Senator Jeannie Haddaway, U.S. Rep. Andy Harris, and Presidents of Kent, Queen Anne’s, Caroline and Talbot counties commissions and councils spoke at the opening of the new $37 million Chesapeake College Health Professions and Athletics Center (HPAC) . The largest construction project in the College’s history, the college will now be able to offer certification level coursework in a wider array of health professions and to host regional college basketball tournaments.

The Maryland School for the Blind

Newcomer, Case and Campbell Hall Renovations

MCA is pleased to announce they have been selected to provide full architecture services for The Maryland School for the Blind. This project is Phase III of the school’s master plan effort and includes the renovation of three buildings, Case, Campbell and the historic Newcomer Hall. The Maryland School for the Blind is a private, statewide resource center providing outreach, school and residential programs to children and youth who are blind or visually impaired including those with multiple disabilities.

The Forbush School

Sheppard Pratt Health Systems

The Forbush School is a 12-month special education program for students ages five to 21 with autism spectrum disorder and other related disorders. MCA was selected by Sheppard Pratt Health System for the renovation and conversion of 15,300 SF of traditional offices to spaces that accommodate the needs of the school. The program includes classrooms, administrative offices, a library, transitional classrooms for activities of daily living, vocational classroom, multi-purpose room/gym and an occupational therapy room with a sensory integration room.

The Jefferson School is a 12 month special education day school and residential school serving students ages 12 – 21 who need a specialized educational environment. MCA was recently awarded the opportunity to provide architectural services for the renovation of four residential houses to improve staff and patient safety, improve living spaces, create storage, increase staff office space and upgrade finishes.

The Million Dollar Walk

Cara Coughlin joins the spouses / partners of the McDaniel College Board of Trustees for a presentation of the Million Dollar Walk. The Million Dollar Walk is a series of architectural, civil, and landscape projects that aim to enhance campus features along the admissions tour. After the presentation, Cara Coughlin and two student tour guides led the committee on a modified admissions tour to show the impact of these projects in context.

Towson University, Health + Counseling Centers

Move-In

Towson University's departments for student health and counseling moved into the recently complete Health and Counseling Centers for which MCA provided architectural services for an addition and complete renovation.

Fairhill School

Fairhill School, a first through eighth grade independent school in Dallas, Texas had long wanted to expand their Fine Arts and Science facilities. Working with the local design firm D2 Architects, MCA crafted a unique design to achieve this goal within very tight site constraints. Having completed a full fund-raising brochure with 3D renderings describing the proposed project and its anticipated costs, the school is now engaged in a capital campaign to fund the project.
